2024 CFL: Calgary at Edmonton

Edmonton's defense disintegrated in the final quarter, allowing Calgary to rack up 160 yards and two majors in their first two possessions, as the Stampeders pulled away to win 32-10 at Commonwealth Stadium. The Stamps struck first when Jake Maier capped an eight-play drive on their first possession with a five-yard strike to Marken Michel, and René Paredes added a 45 FG the next time they had the ball. Calgary's third possession ended in a score as well, as they ground out an 11-play, 53-yard drive that was finished off when Matthew Shiltz snuck the ball in from the 1 on the second attempt. It looked like an early blowout for the Elks at home, but they got on the board late in the first half when McLeod Bethel-Thompson hit Eugene Lewis with a 23-yard touchdown pass; CAL added another point on a Cody Grace single before the halftime break.

The Elks built a little momentum in the third quarter, picking off Maier as Calgary drove inside EDM territory and getting a 40-yard FG from Boris Bede (although Bede missed from 43 on the final play of the quarter). When the Stampeders found themselves backed up at their own 8-yard line and looking at a 1st-and-18 on the first possession of the 4th quarter, only leading by eight points, it looked like circumstances were ripe for a late rally by the home team. But Maier led Calgary 102 yards by going 4-for-5 with two big strikes to Reggie Begelton, and Dedrick Mills pounded the ball into the end zone with two carries from the 17 to put the Stamps up by two scores. This appeared to knock the fight out of the Elks, as they went two-and-out and then gave up 70 yards on two plays when Calgary got the ball back, Mills racing away from the defense from 50 yards out to close the scoring. The Elks did put together an 11-play drive in the final minutes, but it petered out on downs at the Calgary 30 and the visitors erased what was left on the clock with four running plays. Mills ended the game with 161 yards and two TDs on 16 carries. FINAL: Calgary 32, Edmonton 10.
