1919 NL Players of the Month - April/May

The Batter and Pitcher of the Month in the National League for April/May of 1919 are as follows (bold denotes League-leading total) . . .

Batter of the Month

Lew McCarty, NYN: The hitherto-unheralded catcher for the Giants (career .267 hitter over six campaigns coming into the 1919 season) has certainly had a month to remember to open his fourth season with the club, crushing the ball all over the League on his way to circuit-leading totals in batting average (.439), on-base percentage (.484), slugging percentage (.622) and triples (4). He has scored 17 runs (8th best in the NL), and driven in 14 more despite hitting at the bottom of McGraw's lineup, a spot that the Little Napoleon seems content to keep him to lengthen the attack behind Messrs. Burns, Youngs, Chase, Kauff, etc.

Honorable mentions:
   Ray Powell, BSN (.361/.453/.515, 18 r, 19 rbi, 16 bb, 11 sb)
   Zack Wheat, BRO (.379/.410/.509, 10 xbh, 15 r, 17 rbi)
Joe Riggert, BSN (.341/.371/.495, 20 rbi)

Pitcher of the Month

Babe Adams, PIT: The 37-year-old Pirates right-hander appears to have found a new lease on life after a few years at less than his best due to shoulder problems. Adams has been nearly untouchable for the first month of the season, leading the League in wins (5, without a defeat), fewest walks per nine innings (0.67) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.5) while standing fourth in ERA (0.83) and second in WHIP (0.76).

Honorable mentions:
   Dutch Ruether, CIN (3-0, 0.75, 0.72 whip, 36 ip, 19 h, 7 bb, 13 so in four starts)
   Pete Alexander, CHN (4-1, 0.78, 0.87 whip, 46 ip, 34 h, 6 bb, 22 so in five starts)
   Jesse Barnes, NYN (5-1, 1.75, 0.89 whip, 72 ip, 55 h, 9 bb, 22 so in eight starts)
   Hippo Vaughn, CHN (4-4, 2.03, 1.09 whip, 8 cg, 79.2 ip, 74 h, 13 bb, 42 so in nine starts)
