1919 NL - Games of Monday, 19 May

Giants 10, Reds 4: Benny Kauff and Art Fletcher each drove in three runs to lead New York to a resounding victory over Cincinnati at Brush Stadium. The score was three runs to one in favor of the home side when they came to bat in the 4th, and Kauff's two-run two-base hit helped to expand the gap to 6-1. The Giant CF singled home another in the 6th and Fletcher placed the exclamation point at the end of the sentence with a three-run home run in the bottom of the 8th after the Reds had closed to within 7-4. Starter Jean Dubuc held on for nearly eight innings before yielding to Pol Perritt for the final four outs. Kauff, Hal Chase and the irrepressible Lew McCarty had three hits apiece. [box]

Cubs 5, Robins 3: Turner Barber's two-run triple sparked a 6th-inning rally that propelled Chicago past Brooklyn at Ebbets Field. The clubs traded blows in the early innings, with the Robins coming out ahead with a 3-2 lead after two frames before the starting pitchers (Hippo Vaughn and Burleigh Grimes) could find their footing. The scoreline had not budged when the Chicagos came to bat in the top of the 6th but, after one man was retired, Charlie Hollocher and Fred Lear spanked singles to put Grimes into a spot of bother. Barber, who had popped up and been caught looking at a third strike so far, had apparently learned something from that experience because he drilled one deep into the outfield which rattled around until he was sliding safely into third base and both runners were headed back into the dugout to collect handshakes. Vaughn, on the other hand, continued to toss zeroes at the Robins while not allowing a single hit over the final three innings. Lear of Chicago and Ivy Olson of Brooklyn shared the batting honors for the day with three hits each. [box]

Cardinals 4, Phillies 2: Three straight hits with two outs in the top of the 9th produced the runs necessary to break a low-scoring tie and push St. Louis to a win in Philadelphia. The visiting Cardinals got out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on a Rogers Hornsby home run and an RBI double by Frank Snyder, but the Phils got even in the 6th when Cy Williams doubled, Fred Luderus tripled and Doug Baird singled. The home team nearly took the lead in the 8th, but Irish Meusel was gunned down at the plate trying by Jack Smith to score on Baird's two-out base hit. In the next half-inning, a leadoff walk by Smith left his standing at second base with two outs, but Burt Shotton doubled and then Dots Miller singled to double the St. Louis score; Red Ames finished his three innings of relief work by allowing a walk with two outs and then retiring pinch-hitter Possum Whitted on a ground out to shortstop for the final out. Baird had three hits and Gavy Cravath was walked three times for the Phillies. [box]

Pirates 5, Braves 2: Pittsburgh ran out to a 3-0 1st-inning lead on the back of Tony Boeckel's bases-loaded triple and then rode the starboard arm of Babe Adams to a win in Boston. Braves starter Art Nehf had difficulty finding the plate as the game began, walking two of the first four Pirates to load the bases before Boeckel belted a 3-0 fastball all the way to the wall the clear the decks. While Nehf righted the ship and allowed but one run over the subsequent eight innings, he was already in arrears to Adams, who held Boston without a marker (and just five hits) through the first eight innings before wilting slightly in the 9th to allow the Braves to avoid the shutout. Nevertheless, Adams became the League's second four-game winner while Casey Stengel also tripled, and scored twice, for the victors. [box]
