Giants 4, Reds 3: George Burns tripled in the bottom of the 12th inning to turn a Cincinnati error fatal in a tight contest in Upper Manhattan. The Reds had staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after batting only three times against Red Causey, with Edd Roush smashing a two-run home run in the 1st and then singling home another with two outs in the 3rd. Hal Chase responded with a four-bagger of his own in the 4th and Heinie Zimmerman and Jigger Statz knocked across runs in the 7th against Hod Eller to tie the score. The Reds ran themselves out of a potential game-winning rally in the 10th when two men were caught stealing before Jake Daubert tripled, and New York left a rally hanging in their half of the inning when Larry Doyle bounced into a double play with the winning run on second base. In the 12th, Cincinnati were again undone on the basepaths as Lew McCarty caught Greasy Neale attempting to poach third with Roush at the plate and one out, just before the Reds CF ripped a double down the left-field line. In the bottom half, the mistakes finally came home to roost. Pitcher Fred Toney grounded one down to third base, but Heinie Groh could not pick it cleanly and Toney reached first. That sent Burns to the plate, having an uncharacteristically tough day with the bat, but George Joseph touched Jimmy Ring for a deep fly that Roush could not reach and Toney circled the bases to earn the win with his five innings of shutout relief work. Braves 3, Pirates 2: Joe Riggert knocked in two runs and Boston barely held on to an early lead to edge Pittsburgh at Braves Field. The Braves scored single runs in each of the first two innings, and Riggert drove in his second of the game with a two-out single in the 5th, as Boston worked its way to a 3-0 lead. This didn't last long, however, as Pittsburgh plated a pair in the 6th on singles by Zeb Terry and Casey Stengel to pull back within a run. But Dick Rudolph held fast on the hill for the Braves, getting.a key double play grounder in the 9th after a leadoff walk to George Cutshaw raised the spectre of a late Pittsburgh comeback. Carson Bigbee had two hits and a stolen base for the Pirates, while Buck Herzog swiped two bags for Boston. [box]
Cubs 6, Robins 4: Chicago turned five 9th-inning singles into a three-run rally that put Brooklyn to the sword at home late in the afternoon. The early stages of the game were a see-saw affair as Brooklyn went out 2-0 in their first two at-bats, the Cubs scored three in their next two appearances at the dish, and the home team took the lead again in the 6th on Zack Wheat's two-run double. Rube Marquard stemmed the tide through the 8th, escaping a second-and-third one-out jam in that inning, but allowed singles to the first two Cubs in the 9th and was finally relieved of his duties by Uncle Robbie. That brought on Leon Cadore, who got the first hitter on a force play but then gave up three straight run-scoring singles that catapulted Chicago into the lead. Paul Carter came on to pitch the last of the 9th and dispatched the Robins quickly. Wheat had four hits, two of which were worth two bases. [box]
Cardinals 5, Phillies 4: Six St. Louis batters had at least two hits and the Cardinals held on at the death to edge Philadelphia. Austin McHenry tripled in a run in the 5th, and Rogers Hornby doubled home two in the 6th, as STL ran out to a 5-1 lead, but Philadelphia pulled one back in the bottom half when Gavy Cravath doubled and Doug Baird tripled after two men were out. Marv Goodwin put the Phils away in the next two innings, but the bottom of the 9th started off on the wrong foot when Milt Stock kicked Cravath's ground ball on the inning's first pitch. Baird then singled and Philadelphia was in business. After Ed Sicking whiffed, Leo Callahan stroked a pinch-hit RBI single and Bevo LeBourveau hit a Baltimore chop to second that scored another run. With the tying run now at second with two out, Goodwin got Harry Pearce to lob one in the air to third base where Stock fielded it cleanly this time to end the game. [box]
