1919 NL - Games of Wednesday, 21 May

Cardinals 10, Phillies 7: St. Louis pounded out sixteen hits, eight of which went for extra bases, to outslug Philadelphia at the Baker Bowl. It all looked to be easy for the visitors when they rocked Gene Packard for five runs in the 1st, and another in the 2nd, but the Phillies endeavored to make a game of of it by scoring once in the 4th and three times in the 6th powered by Gavy Cravath's triple. Two RBI singles in the top of the 7th made it 8-4, but the Phillies scored three again in the 7th, with Doug Baird's two-run double making it an 8-7 game. Bill Sherdel was summoned as the third Cardinal hurler and asked to restore order to the proceedings and this he did, holding Philadelphia at bay while his teammates were scoring insurance runs in each of the final two innings to seal the deal. Gene Paulette had two doubles and a single, while Austin McHenry tripled and knocked in three. [box]

Pirates 5, Braves 0: Wilbur Cooper stymied Boston on four hits and contributed two hits to Pittsburgh's win in Boston. The Pirates took the lead in the 2nd on a single, walk, sacrifice and ground out and the put it out of reach with three more in 5th - Cooper drove in the first with a one-out single with runners on the corners and then Zeb Terry singled home two more two batters later. Cooper, meanwhile, was only allowing the Braves two singles over the first six innings and allowed only one Bostonian to reach second base. His fourth victory tied him for the League lead, and pulled the Pirates into a three-way tie atop the National League standings. [box]
