Cardinals 10, Phillies 7: St. Louis pounded out sixteen hits, eight of which went for extra bases, to outslug Philadelphia at the Baker Bowl. It all looked to be easy for the visitors when they rocked Gene Packard for five runs in the 1st, and another in the 2nd, but the Phillies endeavored to make a game of of it by scoring once in the 4th and three times in the 6th powered by Gavy Cravath's triple. Two RBI singles in the top of the 7th made it 8-4, but the Phillies scored three again in the 7th, with Doug Baird's two-run double making it an 8-7 game. Bill Sherdel was summoned as the third Cardinal hurler and asked to restore order to the proceedings and this he did, holding Philadelphia at bay while his teammates were scoring insurance runs in each of the final two innings to seal the deal. Gene Paulette had two doubles and a single, while Austin McHenry tripled and knocked in three. [box]

Giants 4, Reds 3: George Burns tripled in the bottom of the 12th inning to turn a Cincinnati error fatal in a tight contest in Upper Manhattan. The Reds had staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after batting only three times against Red Causey, with Edd Roush smashing a two-run home run in the 1st and then singling home another with two outs in the 3rd. Hal Chase responded with a four-bagger of his own in the 4th and Heinie Zimmerman and Jigger Statz knocked across runs in the 7th against Hod Eller to tie the score. The Reds ran themselves out of a potential game-winning rally in the 10th when two men were caught stealing before Jake Daubert tripled, and New York left a rally hanging in their half of the inning when Larry Doyle bounced into a double play with the winning run on second base. In the 12th, Cincinnati were again undone on the basepaths as Lew McCarty caught Greasy Neale attempting to poach third with Roush at the plate and one out, just before the Reds CF ripped a double down the left-field line. In the bottom half, the mistakes finally came home to roost. Pitcher Fred Toney grounded one down to third base, but Heinie Groh could not pick it cleanly and Toney reached first. That sent Burns to the plate, having an uncharacteristically tough day with the bat, but George Joseph touched Jimmy Ring for a deep fly that Roush could not reach and Toney circled the bases to earn the win with his five innings of shutout relief work. Giants 10, Reds 4: Benny Kauff and Art Fletcher each drove in three runs to lead New York to a resounding victory over Cincinnati at Brush Stadium. The score was three runs to one in favor of the home side when they came to bat in the 4th, and Kauff's two-run two-base hit helped to expand the gap to 6-1. The Giant CF singled home another in the 6th and Fletcher placed the exclamation point at the end of the sentence with a three-run home run in the bottom of the 8th after the Reds had closed to within 7-4. Starter Jean Dubuc held on for nearly eight innings before yielding to Pol Perritt for the final four outs. Kauff, Hal Chase and the irrepressible Lew McCarty had three hits apiece. [box]
