1919 NL - Games of Saturday, 14 June

Giants 7, Cubs 0: Fred Toney throttled the Chicago Nationals on three singles and New York hitters teed off on League ERA leader Hippo Vaughn for thirteen hits in an easy Giant win at Weeghman Park. In what was was billed as a rematch of their legendary double no-hit matchup two seasons ago, Vaughn never really got to grips with the Giant offense. The visitors left runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings and then started the 3rd with three straight singles, and Larry Doyle's sac fly then opened the scoring. The Cubs got their first hit of the game when Max Flack led off the 4th with a single, but was almost immediately erased attempting to steal his way into scoring position. In the 5th, NY again touched Vaughn (6-6) for three straight base hits to begin the inning, and this time the Giants turned them into a crooked number - the third hit, from Benny Kauff, scored a run, Art Fletcher hit a sacrifice fly, and Lew McCarty tripled across a third to make it a 4-0 game. The Cubs got another single in the 7th, and a second from Flack in the 9th, but didn't come close to scoring against Toney (2-2) on either occasion while the Giants were padding their lead with three more runs in the late innings while the Cubs fell to pieces (three errors in the final three innings). [box] [broadcast]

Braves 2, Reds 1: Walt Tragesser's 8th-inning RBI single was the difference in a tight game between Boston and Cincinnati. The Braves had taken a early lead when Walton (.165) Cruise lifted a leadoff home run in the 2nd, but Jack Scott and Red Fisher had wrestled to a standstill after that. When Boston came to bat in the top of the 8th they still held a slim 1-0 lead as Joe Riggert drew a leadoff walk from Fisher (4-8). Lena Blackburne bunted him to second and Tragesser followed with a base hit into center that scored Riggert to double the lead. The Reds got two base hits to start the 9th, and Larry Kopf's ground out scored one of them, but Scott (1-1) retired pinch-hitter Jimmy Smith on a fly ball to Riggert in center that finished off the game. [box]

Pirates 6, Phillies 1: Tony Boeckel and George Cutshaw each had three hits and two RBI to lead Pittsburgh over their intrastate rivals at Forbes Field. The Pirates got one in the 1st when Boeckel doubled with Casey Stengel aboard, and then hit Brad Hogg (1-5) with a four-spot in the 3rd on three doubles and three singles, Bockel and Cutshaw each stroking a run-scoring two-bagger. From that point forward, Erskine Mayer (3-4) just sat back in the rocking chair and threw strikes (no walks) which the Phillies phailed to hit hard (seven hits, all singles). The visitors spoiled the shutout bid in the 8th, but Mayer carried on to the end to saddle Philadelphia with their thirtieth loss of the young season. [box]

Robins 3, Cardinals 2: Mack Wheat's two-run single split open a tie game in the top of the 6th and Jeff Pfeffer held St Louis under wraps to secure the Brooklyn win. The teams traded single runs in the early innings on RBI hits by Zack Wheat (three hitsand Dots Miller, but the Robins opened the 6th with two singles. After a force out that cut down the lead runner and a ground out that put men on second and third, Mack knifed the big hit to score them both. Pfeffer (7-4) got into real hot water in the bottom of the 9th. allowing a run and loading the bases with just one out, but he cut the tying run own at the plate on a tapper back to the mound and then retired Verne Clemons for the final out to escape and earn the win. [box]
