1919 NL - Games of Monday, 16 June

Pirates 2, Phillies 1: Walter Schmidt and Casey Stengel singled in 3rd-inning runs and Babe Adams made sure those were sufficient for Chicago to nick Philadelphia at Forbes Field. Adams (7-2) shut the Phillies down on just one hit over the first six innings, a two-out single by Irish Meusel in the 4th, but allowed a solo homer to Gavy Cravath (his circuit-pacing 9th) in the 8th and then had to pitch around a one-out Doug Baird single in the 9th to finish off his thirty-batter work of art. Frank Woodward (0-7) suffered the tough loss despite allowing only six hits, and Schmidt's two hits were the most on either club. [box]

Cubs 4, Giants 1: Fred Merkle doubled twice and knocked in two runs, and Phil Douglas pitched effectively to contact for nine innings as Chicago defeated New York. The home-standing Cubs got o runs in the 1st and 2nd to grab the early lead for Douglas, and Shufflin' Phil scattered five hits while walking and striking out only one batter. The only NY excitement on the basepaths came in the top of the 8th after Chicago had pushed their lead to 3-0 on Douglas' own RBI hit; George Burns drew the only Giant walk of the game and then Ross Youngs ripped a ball to the CF fence for a triple that scored a run and brought the tying run to the plate. But Art Fletcher could only ground out routinely to third base, the Cubs made another insurance payment in the 8th, and Adams shook off Pete Kilduff's error to start the 9th to shrug aside the final three Giants. [box]

Robins 2, Cardinals 0: Al Mamaux mastered the St Louis batters and Ernie Krueger continued his hot hitting with three base hits and an RBI as Brooklyn won at Redland Field. Krueger's leadoff single led to the game's first run in the 3rd, and his RBI base hit delivered the second score in the 8th. St. Louis got two men aboard with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, but Mamaux (4-1) got pinch-hitter Joe Schultz to hit the ball in the air to medium left field for the game's final out. [box]
