2025 MLS Co-Op Replay - NE at NSH (2-22-2025)

23 February 2025: Sam Surridge scored twice in the final ten minutes to rescue Nashville SC from a demoralizing defeat in the their home opener.

The Nashville crowd hadn’t all settled in their seats before the new season got underway in an abrupt fashion. In the second minute, Ignatius Ganago of the Revolution was tripped from behind in the Nashville box by Jack Maher and referee Marcos de Oliveira immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Carles Gil dive the spot kick home without mistake and the visitors had grabbed control of the game in its infancy. New England looked to capitalize on their early fortune and controlled the play for much of the first half, but there were few real chances for either side and NE went to the dressing room with their lead still intact.

The home side slowly began to tilt the game in their own direction about ten minutes into the second half, and Harry Mukhtar and Surridge each had decent chances in the middle of the half, but the Revolution and Aljaz Ivacic were proving to be a a difficult nut to crack protecting the lead. The 24,000 in Geodis Park had mostly lost faith as the minutes ticked down with no goals in sight when, out of nowhere, Edward Tagseth’s long through ball from the right wing sprung Surridge clear of the New England defense and the Bournmouth academy product curled the ball around Ivacic and into the net to bring the crowd to its feet in excitement and relief. Now, with four minutes to play in regulation, it became like shooting fish in a barrel for Nashville. As the game moved towards injury time the ball hardly crossed midfield, although the home team wasted two chances on shots over the bar and Surridge had one pushed aside by Ivacic.

It seemed inevitable that there would be only one winner, if there was one at all, and this came to pass in the second minute of stoppage time. Walker Zimmerman bent a cross from the top of the area towards the left post, and Surridge was at the end of it to volley the ball into the roof of the net for the full three points and a positive start to a season in which the Coyotes hoped to bounce back from their dismal 2024 campaign. FINAL: Nashville SC 2, New England Revolution 1.
