The Splendid Splinter Project - 29 May 1941

(This game was played as part of The Splendid Splinter co-op project to replay Ted Williams' .406 season of 1941.)

Joe Dobson recovered from a rough first frame to go the distance and Ted’s solo shot in the 5th inning proved to be the difference between the Sox and Athletics at Fenway.

The first inning of the game was The Joe Cronin Show - on both sides of the ball. His two errors in the top of the inning allowed Philadelphia to score four times, rookie Pete Suder knocking in the second two with a two-out single. But the Sox shortstop regrouped to follow Ted’s two-out walk in the bottom half with a homer over the left field wall that cut the Boston deficit in half. The long ball would again be the weapon of choice for the Sox when they tied the score in the 5th; Pete Fox doubled with one away, and Jim Tabor followed with their second two-run drive of the afternoon and it was a 4-4 game.

Dobson was holding down the fort, but he was getting some help - the Boston defense turned double plays in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 7th innings to keep the As pinned down while the home team was playing catch-up. In the bottom of the 5th, Ted came up with two outs and the bases empty and yanked Jack Knott into the right-field seats and the Sox had come all the way back. The As got the leadoff man on base against Dobson in each of the last three innings, but the Sox starter escaped until PH Eddie Collins doubled in the 9th to put runners at second and third with one out. That brought Mike Ryba on to pitch in a tough spot, with the tying run only ninety feet away, but he got Al Brancato to pop to shallow left and Wally Moses to tap lightly to first with Ryba taking the toss from Lou Finney to finish the game.

Ted today: 1-for-3, HR, RBI, 2 R, BB, GIDP

Ted through 27 games:
   48-for-97, 6 2B, 1 3B, 5 HR, 22 RBI, 27 R, 26 BB, 3 K, 1 SB (.495/.602/.732)

Ted's 5th-inning blast gives the Sox the lead for good
