The Splendid Splinter Project - 1 June 1941

(This game was played as part of The Splendid Splinter co-op project to replay Ted Williams' .406 season of 1941.)

The Red Sox frittered away a sizable 1st-inning lead in a game that featured big slugging from both teams; in the end, it was the Tigers who made better use of their big hits to win 9-6 in the nightcap of a twinbill front of their home crowd.

It was all Boston as the contest got underway - Dom DiMaggio singled to start it off, Lou Finney followed with a double, and then Ted crushed a Schooboy Rowe offering out of the field of play for a home run that gave the Sox a 3-0 lead at the cost of zero outs. After Rudy York had led off the Tigers 2nd with a solo shot, Boston pushed their advantage to 5-1 when Jimmie Foxx took Rowe deep in the 3rd with Williams on second after a leadoff two-bagger.

But the Tigers were not done quite yet. A Skeeter Newsome error and two Charlie Wagner walks opened the door to a two-run 3rd for the home team, and then Wagner disintegrated completely in the 5th. Charlie Gehringer reached on Joe Cronin’s error on the first pitch of the inning and then, after Wagner got Rip Radcliff to fly out to right for the first out, he suddenly lost sight of the strike zone - three straight free passes forced in a run and, when he was forced to groove one, Billy Sullivan singled home two more to put the Tigers in front. Rowe followed with an RBI single to make the score 7-5 and the Detroit pitcher, recovered completely from the early Sox onslaught, retired nine in a row at one stretch before leaving with that same two-run edge after seven innings of work.

Boston put two men on with one away in the 8th, but Al Benton struck out PH Pete Fox and retired Frankie Pytlak to retire the side. Detroit then salted it away with a two-run homer from Bruce Campbell in the 8th, despite Ted’s thrid hit and third RBI of the game in the top of the 9th. The long afternoon for the hurlers featured a total of eight doubles and four home runs.
