(This game was played as part of The Splendid Splinter co-op project to replay Ted Williams' .406 season of 1941.)
Bob Feller and the Indians somehow outlast an epic spell of command issues to ride an Oscar Grimes home run to a 7-2 win over the Sox at Fenway.
There had been no scoring as of yet when Cleveland came to bat in the top of the 3rd with just one hit off of Dick Newsome in the first two innings. But Soup Campbell doubled with one out and Gee Walker followed right behind with a single to create the first real scoring threat of the afternoon. Jeff Heath singled home Campbell and, after it looked as if Newsome might limit the damage by getting Ken Keltner to pop up on the infield, Grimes hit a towering fly over the wall in left to give the visitors a 4-0 lead. Ted hit a two-out solo shot in the bottom half to get Boston on the board, but the starters managed to turn down the temperature in the middle innings.
Doing so was not a cakewalk for Feller, however. He struggled mightily throughout to find and keep the strike zone in his sights, walking the bases full in the 1st and again in the 7th; he had to be pulled from the game in the latter inning after his tenth walk of the day (paired with six Ks) brought the tying run to the plate in the person of Jimmie Foxx. Clint Brown came on to retire Double X, but hit Jim Tabor to force in a run before Bobby Doerr popped out in a big spot to end the inning. A Tabor error to start the 9th, followed by two singles and a fielder’s choice, gave the Indians two more runs’ worth of cushioning and Brown retired the final five Sox to salt it away.
Ted today: 1-for-4, HR, R, RBI, BB, E
