(This game was played as part of The Splendid Splinter co-op project to replay Ted Williams' .406 season of 1941.)
Charlie Keller’s 8th-inning two-run home run put the Yankees ahead for the first time in the game, and Johnny Murphy shut the door on the Sox in a battle of Leftys at Fenway. Boston broke out of the gate early against Lefty Gomez, scoring once in the 1st on Joe Cronin’s single after Red Rolfe’s two-out error had kept the inning alive and once in the 2nd on Stan Spence’s two-out RBI single. Then Messrs. Grove and Gomez began to tighten the screws, and the score remained 2-0 ithrough five innings. Grove allowed a solo homer to Rolfe in the top of the 6th, but was working on a three-hitter as the game moved into the 8th. With one away in the Yankees half of that inning, Phil Rizzuto singled and then, one out later, Keller launched a blast into the RF stands to give NY the lead. Murphy got Ted to ground into a 163 double play in the bottom half, and the visitors got an insurance run in the 9th on two singles wrapped around a ground out. Jimmie Foxx led off the last of the 9th for the Red Sox with a base on balls but none of the next three BOS hitters could get the ball out of the infield against Murphy and the Yanks held on to win.
