Robins 5, Pirates 2: Ernie Krueger hit a pair of home runs, the second of which broke tie in the 7th inning and pushed Brooklyn to a win in Pittsburgh. The Pirates took the early lead behind three 2nd-inning singles, Zeb Terry's knock scoring Walter Schmidt with the second and final run of the inning. But Krueger homered with two outs and the bases empty in the 5th and then, after the Robins had tied the game in the 6th on Ed Konetchy's RBI single, he followed Lew Malone's leadoff hit in the 7th with his fourth home run of the season to put the visitors in front. Jeff Pfeffer (6-4) held the Pirates to two hits over the final four innings to lock up the victory, while Earl Hamilton (1-9) suffered his League-leading ninth defeat. [box]
Phillies 4, Cubs 2: Cy Williams and Gavy Cravath homered and George Smith weathered a 9th-inning storm as the Phillies scored a rare road win in Chicago. Williams hit his third four-bagger of the campaign to open the scoring in the 3rd, and Cravath blasted his League-leading eighth in the 8th to make the score 4-0 in favor of Philadelphia. What appeared as if it would be a straightforward victory turned out not to be so, as the Cubs scored twice in the bottom of the 9th and brought the tying run to the plate before Smith (2-2) could polish things off by retiring PH Pete Kilduff for the final out. Giants 6, Reds 4: Heinie Zimmerman's 7th inning sacrifice fly gave New York the lead for good and Rube Benton retired twelve of the last fourteen Reds to make that edge stand up to the end at Redland Field. The two team took turns scoring early in the game, Benny Kauff homering (2) for New York, and the score had already reached 3-3 after the first three innings. Cincinnati took the lead in the 5th when Benton (3-5) hit Greasy Neale with two outs, the Reds right-fielder stole second, and Larry Kopf cracked an RBI single. But Ray Fisher (4-7) could not hold the NY attack at bay - Hal Chase singled and Larry Doyle doubled to start the 7th and tie the game again, and Zimmerman hit one deep enough to score Doyle after he had advanced to third on a ground out. Three more singles (NY blistered Fisher for fifteen hits) plated an insurance marker in the 8th and Benton pitched a 1-2-3 8th and then ended the game by teasing a double-play ball from the bat of Morrie Rath. Chase collected four hits for the Giants, and Art Fletcher had three as the Giants passed the Reds and into first place by percentage points. [box]
Braves 3, Cardinals 2: Dick Rudolph held St Louis to six hits and Jim Thorpe broke out of a slump with three knocks as Boston won a close one at Robison Field. The Braves broke to a 3-0 lead on a walk, sacrifice, wild pitch and ground out in the 1st and RBI singles from Hank Gowdy and Buck Herzog in the 4th. A Verne Clemons triple drove home a Cardinal run in the 5th to cut the lead to two runs, but Rudolph (5-2) was untested again until the 9th when a Rabbit Maranville error on Dots Miller's leadoff ground ball led to some uneasiness for Boston. Milt Stock singled and Cliff Heathcote hit a run-scoring fly ball to get STL within a single score, and PH Burt Shotton's single moved Stock to third base. Doc Lavan could not propel him the final 90 feet, however, grounding the ball to Maranville who made no mistake this time. Thorpe, who came into the game with only three hits in twenty at-bats since his arrival from New York three weeks ago, singled three times out of the cleanup spot. [box]
