Pirates 10, Robins 2: Carson Bigbee had four hits and drove home four runs to lead a sixteen-hit Pittsburgh attack that overwhelmed Brooklyn at Forbes Field. The Pirates led 6-1 after four innings, with Bigbee already having a single, double, stolen base and RBI in his account; a three-run 8th inning in which he singled home two runs then put the game way beyond Brooklyn's reach. Frank Miller (4-2) used this support to good effect, allowing just single runs in the 4th and the 9th and walking no one while striking out three Robins. Bigbee was supported by three hits each from Casey Stengel and Walter Schmidt, and the Pirates also put on a fine display of scientific baseball, stealing three bases along with three successful sacrifices. Cubs 4, Phillies 1: Pete Alexander pitched nine sharp innings to join the League leaders on seven pitching victories, and Chicago capitalized on a spate of wildness from Elmer Jacobs to beat Philadelphia in front of a satisfied crowd. The Phils were the first to score, getting three straight safe hits with one away in the 5th to take the lead behind Possum Whitted's RBI single. But the Cubs got that one back in the bottom half when Charlie Deal singled to start the inning, was sacrificed to second, and raced home on Bill Killefer's hit. In the following frame, the Chicagos swung the bats with authority and took advantage of some charity from Phils starter Jacobs (2-6). With one out, Les Mann doubled, Fred Merkle singled and Dode Paskert walked to load the bases with baby bears. Charlie Deal was next and he, too, was the benefiicary of four wide ones from Jacobs and the Cubs had the lead. Pete Kilduff followed Deal with a fly ball that was hit well enough to score Merkle for a two-run lead. Philadelphia got two on wit two out in the 7th, and got a free baserunner on Kilduff's error in the 9th, but Alexander (7-1) was up to the task and ended the game on a ground ball double play by Cy Williams. Giants 6, Reds 4: New York built a substantial lead and then held on to beat the Reds for the third straight afternoon in Cincinnati. The Giants scored one in the 1st, one in the 3rd and one in the 5th to go up 3-0, and then padded that with two more in the 6th on RBI singles by Hal Chase and Larry Doyle. The Reds scored twice themselves in the bottom half of that inning, on an RBI double by Greasy Neale and a run-scoring grounder by Larry Kopf, but the game felt safely tucked way for the Gothams after a walk, two bunts and a sacrifice fly extended the lead to 6-2 in the top of the 9th. Jesse Barnes (7-1) ran into problems in the bottom of the 9th, however, after Rube Bressler walked with one away and Ivey Wingo tripled in a run and scored on Barnes' wild pitch. Jean Dubuc came on for the second straight day to stem the tide and got Morrie Rath to fly out and Jake Daubert to bounce in to a force out as the tying run at the plate. Chase and Benny Kauff each had three hits for New York. [box]
Cardinals 7, Braves 4: Jack Smith scored twice, stole a base and had two RBI as St Louis outpaced Boston. The Braves got off to the best possible start when their first two hitters, Rabbit Maranville and Buck Herzog, hit home runs off of Lee Meadows (4-4). The Cardinals bounced back from that shock quickly, scoring three times in the 2nd with the help of Smith's two-run double, and twice more in the 4th when Jake Northrop (0-3) walked three men and Milt Stock tripled in a pair. The teams traded runs in the 6th and in the 8th and then, after Meadows walked Art Wilson to start the top of the 9th, Bill Sherdel come out of the bullpen to retire the next three men and earn his League-best fourth save of the season.
