1919 NL - Games of Sunday, 29 June

Pirates 3, Cubs 2: Wilbur Cooper pitched eleven fine innings and Howdy Caton earned him a victory with a 12th-inning RBI single that ended a long afternoon in Chicago. The Cubs held a 2-1 lead into the 8th inning behind Hippo Vaughn, but Caton's two-out double scored Cliff Lee from second base to tie the game and eventually force extra innings. Chicago squandered Les Mann's one-out triple in the 11th, and the Pirates took advantage when they came up to hit. Cooper (9-3) drew a walk with two outs and Carson Bigbee legged out an infield single, before Caton hit a sinking liner to right that fell in front of Max Flack for a hit and allowed Cooper to come around to score for the lead. Having seen his horse expend himself on the bases, Fred Mitchell decided to lift him in favor of Earl Hamilton in the bottom of the 12th and this almost came back to haunt him. After two quick outs, the Cubs got two men on base before getting Flack to ground one to first base to retire the side. Mann had three hits for Chicago. [box]

Wilbur Cooper, Pittsburgh

Robins 9, Phillies 1: Jimmy Johnston collected four hits and Zack Wheat knocked in three runs as Brooklyn coasted to an easy win over Philadelphia at Ebbets Field. Seven consecutive Robins reached base after two men were out in the 3rd as the home team leapt to a 6-0 lead which Sherry Smith (4-3) had no trouble protecting. The Phillies didn't dent the scoreboard until there were two outs in the 9th inning, as Smith scattered seven singles and two walks. The Phils phailed to help themselves with four fielding errors. [box]

Reds 4, Cardinals 0: St Louis had ten hits off of Hod Eller, but none of those came with runners in scoring position and Morrie Rath scored the first two Cincinnati Runs in a whitewash win. On three occasions in the first four innings, the Cards got two men aboard on consecutive singles, and failed to score a run each time, twice striking out for the final out of the inning. Rath reached on one of the PHI errors to lead off the 3rd and scored when Edd Roush singled with two outs, and singled and scored on Heinie Groh's sac fly in the 5th. STL had one more chance against Eller, loading the bases with two outs in the 8th, but Doc Lavan popped to shallow left field to kill the threat, Eller padded his own lead with an RBI single in the bottom half and then he shut the visitors down in the 9th. Milt Stock had three hits for STL. [box]
