1919 NL - Games of Saturday, 7 June

Robins 6, Reds 2: .Jimmy Johnston's three-run homer capped a four-run 7th inning that lifted Brooklyn to a win at Redland Field. The game was a tight, well-pitched affair through six innings, with the Robins holding a 2-1 lead despite not being able to record a hit against Dutch Ruether (3-2) after the 2nd inning. Four singles in the 1st had gotten the visitors two runs, and Cincinnati got one back in the 2nd when Edd Roush doubled and Greasy Neale singled him home. But the bats had gone quiet after that, with Ruether doing his thing and Sherry Smith retiring 17 of 19 at one stretch. In the 7th, though, the Robins touched Ruether for two hits that put runners on second ond third with nobody out; after Smith whiffed for the first out, Ivy Olson hit a tapper to the right of the mound which Ruether fielded and flung home, but the throw was late as Lew Malone slide home under the tag. Lee Magee grounded into a fielder's choice at the plate to cut down a second run, but Johnston followed with a deep drive over the head of the outfielders for his first four-base hit of the season and a 6-1 Brooklyn lead.  The Reds got one unearned run the the bottom of the 9th but Smith (3-1) finished off a six-hitter by getting Neale to ground out to first base for the game's last out. Ernie Krueger had three hits and a walk in four trips to the plate for the Robins. [box]

Cubs 4, Braves 2: Bill Killefer broke apart a tie game with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the 8th and Phil Douglas went the route to defeat Boston at Weeghman Park. The game was tied at two runs apiece through the first seven innings, with the Braves getting a solo homer from Buck Herzog and a sac fly from starter Art Nehf and Chicago getting a pair of two-out RBI singles from Killefer. Fred Merkle led off the home half of the 8th with a base hit, and took second when Rabbit Maranville booted Les Mann's ground ball. Charlie Deal attempted to sacrifice the runners along, but Art Wilson's attempt to force Mann at second was late, loading the bases. That brought Killefer to the plate, and despite his already having delivered two clutch hits, Nehf (4-5) wasn't careful enough with the Cubs' catcher who lined a pitch off the first-base bag and into right field to score Merkle and Mann. Douglas (2-5) finished in style with a perfect 9th inning that included a strikeout. [box]

Giants 6, Pirates 1: New York jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind the hitting of Ross Youngs and Heinie Zimmerman and Red Causey pitched around six walks to go the distance and hold Pittsburgh without an earned run for his sixth victory of the season. Wilbur Cooper (5-3) was no mystery on the hill for the Pirates, surrendering seven hits (three for extra bases) in 2.2 innings; a George Burns triple to start the game led to one run in the 1st, and then a leadoff three-bagger by Youngs in the 3rd kicked off a three-run rally that chased Cooper from the game early. Erskine Mayer relieved him, and pitched very well for four innings, but the horse had left the barn at that point; while Causey (6-0) had control challenges, he allowed only one hit over the first six innings, and Pittsburgh didn't mount a challenge until they loaded the bases with two outs in the 7th. Causey got PH Vic Saier to fly out to end that uprising, and then survived a walk and an error in the 8th to win comfortably in the end. Zimmerman scored twice and knocked in a pair as well. [box]

Cardinals 9, Phillies 3: Saint Louis pounded out eighteen hits in yet another poor Phillie pitching performance, and cruised to an easy win at Robison Field. After Gavy Cravath's RBI single gave Philadelphia the lead in the top of the 2nd, St. Louis used three straight singles in the 3rd to tie the score, and then stroked four more in the 4th to score another three runs and begin to run away from the hapless Phils. Two more STL runs followed in the 5th, and the home team continued to pile on in the late innings, with Rogers Hornsby dropping the exclamation point with a bases-empty homer (3) in the 8th. Lee Meadows (3-4) pitched a complete game, and Dots Miller had three singles and a double while scoring twice. [box] [broadcast]
