1919 NL - Games of Wednesday, 14 May

Pirates 11, Phillies 4: Pittsburgh scored seven times in the first extra inning to stun Philadelphia at the Baker Bowl. The Phillies had scored three times in the 6th inning to take a 4-2 lead, but the Pirates cut the deficit in half in the 8th on a pair of singles and a fielder's choice and then manufactured the game-tying run in the 9th on a single, stolen base, sacrifice and wild pitch. In the 10th, the suspense was over fairly quickly as three of the first four Pirates reached base, and Vic Saier and Billy Zitzmann delivered two-run singles for two of PIT's seven safeties in the inning. Carson Bigbee finished with four hits, two runs, a double and a stolen base for the winners. [box]

Braves 7, Cardinals 3: Ray Powell reached base four times to help Boston build a 7-0 lead, and Dick Rudolph made it stand up for nine innings in The Hub. Powell singled and scored the game's first run in the bottom of the 1st, singled to drive in the third in the 3rd, ad walked twice later in the game. Art Wilson provided a big two-run double in the 5th as the Braves opened up some breathing space and Rudolph survived four straight singles in the 6th, and two fielding errors behind him to begin the 9th, to finish with a seven-hitter.  [box]

Robins 2, Reds 0: On a day when base hits were hard to come by, Brooklyn bunched theirs together more efficiently to win another close contest against the Reds. Each team had but a single hit apiece when the home club came to bat in the 4th inning, and Zack Wheat led off with Brooklyn's second. Hi Myers followed that with a triple that scored Wheat with the first run of the game and Ed Konetchy then lined a base hit that brought home Myers. Burleigh Grimes would only allow three hits to the Reds the rest of the way, and Cincinnati would fail to get more than one man on base in nay inning of the contest. [box]

Giants 3, Cubs 1: Larry Doyle had two hits, and the hot-batting Lew McCarty had two knocks and scored two times to lead New York past Chicago. Doyle homered in the 2nd inning for the game's first run, and McCarty (hitting .511) tripled and scored in the 3rd and singled to start another rally in the 5th. Jean Dubuc went the route on the hill for the Giants, allowing only a single 1st inning run; he was touched for base hits by the Cub's first two batters of the game and then held the visitors to three safeties the rest of the way, setting down the final ten New Yorkers in order. [box]
