Giants 5, Phillies 0: Lew McCarty belted a pair of home runs and drove in three runs to support the shutout pitching of Jean Dubuc as New York won at home. The Giants' catcher slugged for four bags in the 4th with one runner on base to extend a one-run NY lead to 3-0, and again in the 6th with the sacks empty for the final run of the game. Dubuc allowed only three hits and a walk to Philadelphia as the visitors were whitewashed for the second straight day by the New Yorkers and saw their season's batting average fall below the .200 mark. Robins 6, Braves 3: Ernie Krueger had a single, double and triple and drove home three men as Brooklyn grabbed the lead early and then padded a slim advantage late in the game to win. Krueger's single and first RBI plated the initial run of a three-score 2nd that gave the home team an early 4-0 bulge. Boston fought back in the 5th with three runs that made it a game again, as Ray Powell doubled home a run and Joe Riggert singled across two more. But Krueger tripled home one insurance run in the 5th and doubled home another in the 7th, while Al Mamaux was battling around nine (!) walks to earn the complete-game victory. [box]
Cardinals 3, Reds 1: St. Louis finally found an answer their early-season Cincinnati dilemma, as Jakie May throttled the League-leaders on .five hits (and five walks) while Frank Snyder and Burt Shotton delivered RBI singles in the 5th that gave the Cards a lead which they would hold until the end as May set down the last eight Reds without allowing a baserunner. Pirates 3, Cubs 2: Carson Bigbee singled home the tie-breaking run in the 3rd inning and Earl Hamilton made it stand up to the final bell as Pittsburgh edged Chicago. It was a 2-2 game in the 3rd (the Pirates getting their runs on Casey Stengel's two-run 1st-inning homer) when Max Carey led off with a single, moved up on George Cutshaw's walk, and scored when Bigbee (three hits) lined one onto the right field grass. Hamilton experienced little difficulty in holding the Reds back until the 9th, when Fred Merkle started the inning with a single and then Charlie Pick drive one into the right center-field gap that put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with nobody out. Charlie Deal then hit a fly ball to medium-deep center field - Merkle broke for home, but Carey's throw home was just in time to cut him down and Bill Killefer then dribbled one weakly back to the mound for the final out.
