1919 NL - Games of Sunday, 27 April

Cubs 2, Cardinals 0: Max Flack drove home the Cub's first run, and scored their second, as Lefty Tyler shut out the winless Cardinals at Weeghman Park. Flack's two-out single scored Bill Killefer from second in the 3rd inning, and then he singled, stole second and went to third on Frank Snyder's wild throw in the 8th before Charlie Hollocher brought him across with a two-out base hit. Tyler scattered six hits and two walks, allowing a runner into scoring position with fewer than two outs only once and retiring ten of the final twelve Cards to close out the game. [box]

Reds 4, Pirates 1: Heinie Groh collected a single, double and triple and Edd Roush knocked in a pair while Dutch Ruether stifled the Pirates in Cincinnati. Groh's single and stolen base were the centerpiece of a two-run 1st for the Reds, and his triple in the 7th led to the final Cincinnati score of the afternoon, with Roush sending the third baseman across home plate on both occasions. Ruether held the Pirate without a hit until the 5th inning, when the visitors scored their only run on George Cutshaw's leadoff double (his first of two on the day) and two groundouts, and then got support from Greasy Neale's throwing arm in the 6th as the Reds' right-fielder gunned down Howdy Caton at the plate for the final out of the inning. Ruether then pitched around leadoff hits in two of the final three innings to keep the Pittsburghs off of the scoresheet again and preserve the lead. [box] [broadcast]
