1 April 1982: In an April Fool's Day tilt that certainly featured more than its share of the bizarre, the Nordiques and Bruins put on display everything that was wild, wacky and wonderful about early-1980s hockey.
Boston scored nine times in the first two periods but somehow still found themselves in a hockey game, one in which they did finally manage to see off Quebec by the score of 10-7. Four goals were on the board before the game hit the six-minute mark and the first period ended with a 5-3 Bruins lead. After the Nords got within one by scoring just twenty-one seconds into the middle period, Boston rattled off four straight goals to make it 9-4 and it appeared to be over. But the visitors scored once late in the second and again early in the third to make it 9-6, with lots of time left, before Rick Middleton salted it away with his second score of the game with six minutes to go.
In addition to the goals (Bruce Crowder and Michel Goulet each had a pair as well), there were penalties - a total of 70 PIM between the two clubs, including three fights and two misconducts. Both the goalies and the referees had to feel that the evening's joke was on them, and were happy to hear the final whistle sound after two hours of carnage . . . FINAL: Boston 10, Quebec 7.
