The Splendid Splinter Project - 8 June 1941

(This game was played as part of The Splendid Splinter co-op project to replay Ted Williams' .406 season of 1941.)

The White Sox erupted for six runs in the 5th inning and cruised behind Ted Lyons to an 8-4 win at Comiskey Park.

Boston took a quick lead when Ted doubled in Dom DiMaggio in the 1st inning, but then their well ran dry as Lyons escaped a Luke Appling error in the 2nd and a bases-loaded jam in the 3rd after uncharacteristic back-to-back walks by the control ace. Chicago, for their part, only had three baserunners in the first four innings against Lefty Grove and it looked to be shaping up into a hurlers’ duel before the ChiSox bats exploded in the 5th.

A single and double to start the inning got Grove in trouble right from the jump, but he retired the next two batters without any damage. Luke Appling followed with a two-run single, though, and a walk was followed by Ben Chapman’s (4-for-4) two-run double; another walk, then two more singles, and it was six on the board for the home team. Lyons retired the next nine Sox in order to tighten the Chicago hold on the game, and Appling was again in the middle of things when he doubled and scored in the 6th. Lyons took an 8-1 lead into the 9th but began to tire, allowing four straight Sox to reach (and two to score) after the first out, then wild pitching across another run before he finally got Joe Cronin to ground out to second base for the final out.
